I remember as a child watching the stars with my family and there was a meteor? that streaked across half the sky it took like 30-45 seconds to burn out what was that?

i mean this sounds like a stupid conspiracy thing to ask but im actually curious what sorts of things enter the atmosphere, i mean ive never seen anything even slightly approach that in my limited time star gazing
