ex. I could buy a movie on Amazon Prime, but can I download it independent of the app/site for watching on any PC at any time?

I want like .mp4 files (or modern equivalent), not some proprietary download from a streaming site that will expire after 30 days without subscription check.

Asking because pirate bay is the only place I really have torrented and several things I want are not available there.

You will need a DVD drive (internal or external) and Handbrake (free software) to copy DVD's to MP4. If you are on Linux (doesn't sound like you do) you simply install Handbrake; if you are on Windows, you will need to download libdvdcss-2.dll and place it into Program Files\HandBrake directory. If you are on Apple buy them from iTunes like a good goy. Edit: I think it might be version ...3.dll now.

I'm not on Apple but that is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid: they own the files and control access.
