Don't use it for security myself but I have a bit of a smart home system. If you want a minimally glowy setup: -Control Server: home-assistant (I run mine on an odroid) with a Conbee 2 zigbee dongle -light bulbs and plugs; buy them preflashed with Tasmota firmware (open source). There's some sellers on aliexpress for this. these connect over wifi. -buttons, sensors and more bulbs; xiao mi aqara range, aliexpress again. Double check model numbers with the conbee 2 compatibility list.

All this stuff can be setup and operated 100% offline. I have mine on a separate VLAN firewalled off from the internet.

Anything wireless is trivial to jam, but it depends on your threat model if that's a problem. I doubt many garden variety niggers are getting about with SDRs and jamming equipment. Connecting anything to home-assistant opens up a lot of flexibility in how you configure it. Flash internal lights when an outdoor sensor triggers? randomly turn lights on and off to make it look like you're home? Send a notification to your phone when a door gets opened? Really anything you can imagine you can do.

More of a curiosity, you can flash the firmware on the smart bulbs? I always wondered about that as those are going to be devices that don't age well for control.

Depends on the bulb itself. Tasmota firmware runs on ESP chips, so if you have a bulb with ESP chip inside you can flash it. (Although you might need to crack it open and solder a serial cable onto the pins)

Ok. So they need to physically be opened to update them. What a pain.
