As a kid, my friends and I mostly had free rein. Be home by dinner time or dark were the most common rules. When school was in session, we'd have a few hours to run around the neighborhood. In the summer it wasn't uncommon to find us riding bikes to the next town miles away. Parents didn't ever know where we were going or what we were doing. As long as we were home on time there was no issue.

With all the random encounters of other kids out and about, you learned all kinds of skills. How to explain a black eye to your parents without getting anyone in trouble, how to judge a person's character, what was "cool" and what wasn't. It was different from being at school, because we were all without supervision and true colors revealed themselves. It was a learning experience everyday.

I'm guilty of being way more over-protective of my kids than my parents were with me. Looking back I think I've been conditioned by media to make my kids' lives less fulfilling. I feel shame.

Where I was from was really hilly so we couldn't go super far. And we lived off of main Road as well and it was tricky to ride your bikes to some of the further neighborhoods. We had a group of kids that were more or less all around the same age in our neighborhood so until around the 7th grade we hung out with just the neighborhood kids all summer. We would sometimes go to the back neighborhood. you could cut through it yard and get over there. there was a handful of kids that we could play with. I used to put camo on and walk around the backwoods and stalk my neighbors in the woods trying to see if they could see me. I confessed jokingly to an older neighbor who live next door that I used to sit in this particular spot with my camo on and just watch the kids play baseball. It was 35 years ago so I don't think he really cared anymore, he thought it was funny. We definitely had free rain that's for sure I'd imagine you would get the same now if you lived in a neighborhood that wasn't filled with degenerates. Not all of them are by any means but all it takes is one pervert. I don't have kids but I was with my brother and he's got two. he let them go off to the bathroom, we were in Virginia Beach. that's just filled with niggers, dick touchers and perverts. I was like you're really going to let your kids go to the bathroom by themselves? So I went into the bathroom and just waited there for the boy. Then we walked over and waited for his sister to come out of the girls bathroom. I mean they're 10 and 9 they're kind of young. Maybe they're not but as I stated before public bathrooms are a little risky in my mind.
