Not this but the stove and oven were always on. Endless food and drink.

I was a little chubby as a kid and the Mom's all would say , "Such a skinny boy, eat ! "

My grandmother was exactly this way. Formal living room covered in plastic you weren’t able to enter. Ever. Personally, I think it was because red sauce is so stinking hard to get out of anything it has been spilled upon. When my dad married my mom (not a wop), she put an end to that tradition. Thankfully, grandma taught mom how to make an excellent red sauce.

They called it gravy , not sauce I dunno if that's like a regional thing or what

It was called gravy in the Sopranos so it might be a Jersey thing

Wasn't Jersey , but east coast , not too far away

It has been a long time since I've been surrounded in a kitchen with a bunch of Italian women cooking, but I do not ever recall hearing the term gravy. My ancestors are from Pescara.

On a side note, can you tell me why, every time I use the quotation tab to reference what someone has said, it puts a > in front of it?

Sorry friend , but no idea why< that happens.

I miss the kitchen part too My family was WASP and not very emotional . I felt more at home with the guineas , lol . More expressive with feelings ,good or bad

I have never heard red sauce called gravy.

Thankfully, my mother taught the recipe to my wife.

Yeah, that's kinda' weird, but I know exactly what you're talking about. When I was a small child, back in the 1960's, we had a new house built. It was a nice house, it would probably cost a million dollars today. When one walked in the front door, there was a room just like that. It was a room that was almost never used. It was furnished with very nice furniture. There was even a piano in there. A piano that no-one ever played...

I really like questions like these. Prime example of why Whites cannot unite.

How you figure ? They treated me like family. I loved those people

I'm glad to hear that and yeah, lots of plastic. Did you know the largest mass lynching in the U.S was in Louisiana of eleven Italians falsely accused of shooting a police officer?

Yes. It was a neighborhood kid named Dominick, his mother's living room was all matching red velvet and dark oak furniture, and there were plastic slipcovers on everything, including the lampshades. Dominick figured himself to be the upcoming neighborhood stud, he was always working on his clothing and appearance. Generally he was an OK guy.

EDITED TO ADD: They also had a large matador painting on black velvet, which was the style at the time.

Velvet paintings , lol. I remember those !

Three subject types dominated the black velvet painting scene at the time: Elvis, matadors, and sad clowns.

Elvis was a big one Niggers liked one with a black female with a big Afro riding a black panther.

No, I wouldn’t risk it.

Glad to hear , lol. Just a funny childhood memory

I think it's just an older immigrant thing. People who had nothing before they moved here were obsessed with preserving what they had. Actually kinda admirable considering the throw away society we live in now.

Yeah, people appreciated their stuff more , that's for sure.

They all had show living rooms, show dining rooms, and show kitchens on the main floor. The real action was in the basement. And they all had pantries that could last a year.

Ummmm, how did you know this?

I was a kid , my friends were wops
