I just saw the term "person of color" used on a Web site. How is it that "person of color" is acceptable to use, but "colored person" is somehow unacceptable? There's no meaningful difference between the two terms.

It's a silly term anyway. What color? Red? Green? Blue? What it actually means is "person who is not white." Why can't we say what we mean these days? If we mean "person who isn't white," we should be able to just say "person who isn't white."

Is this just an american thing? People in europe just say black. "Person of color" sounds needlessly deferential like you would expect from a mutt.
