It's collaborative storytelling. You gather some friends, pick characters you'll play, nominate someone as a dungeon master to guide the overall session by setting the scene and choosing how non-player characters will behave, and go on an adventure. It's a great way to build friendships, creativity, problem-solving, negotiation, etc and get people off their screens. As a group you can decide what type of story you're going to tell. Even if the DM sets the framework for a heist, the actions of the players will determine if it's closest to Ocean's Eleven, Die Hard, or the Pink Panther.
Yes, there are some Woke lunatics...but simply dont play with them.
