I don't consider the Scottish Claymore practical. The English long sword is worthy. The Roman Gladius is also of interesting.

This. You want something shorter, get a Fairbairn-Sykes or a Bowie. Don't want a gladius, try a seax.

Expensive katanas have expensive sheathes and handguards. And that's what you see when it hangs up usually anyways. So for what you actually use them for, they're pretty good.
