I think that some women who just have a low sex drive and don't feel a need to be mothers identify as lesbian as a way to avoid horny guys and friends trying to fix them up on dates. Many lesbians only have sex for a brief time and then become Platonic companions. In other eras, they would be seen as quaint spinsters but today it's been politicized where they are expected to march around with blue hair and nose rings.

For lesbians, i think its more companionship. Females are generally more touchy feely than males and what would be reviled as faggoty for men is completely acceptable for women. Chicks can be completely straight and spoon in bed with their friends, you will never see a straight man in that situation outside a survival situation (and even then frostbite might seem more palatable).
Lesbians are the opposite of homosexual men, but the same in another way, they get with partners that match their sex drive ie none. the long lasting lesbian couples are generally a dyke and an abuse victim. Butch dykes mimic all the worst traits of straight males and have the typical female weaknesses where they have to be spiteful to get what they want, they are the worst of both worlds. Historically, 20% of men obtain 80% of women. Monogamy is not the natural state for humans. The natural state is a male with multiple females; confirmed by genetics. Women are naturally bi-sexual because that provides a sexual display elevating insemination probability. It's a highly successful breeding strategy. Which generally locks in resources. Meaning the strategy successfully results in a next generation.
Genetically women have a natural tendency for close, collective, "sisterhood" bonding because this is their natural state in a harem. They closely support each other but remain fiercely competitive for the attention of men (their shared man). This is commonly observed everywhere today. And their cycles sync to facilitate this strategy.
Even today, where polygamy is common, women are fully supportive of this concept so long as they are well cared for and their status remains. It's society which teaches them jealously and cattiness toward other potential sisters-wives.
Also worth pointing out, even biblically it does not oppose polygamy nor female bi-sexuality. So long as a women accepts the seed of a man, (nearly) anything is fair game for display. The bible does condemn the paganistic rituals of sex magic for women which includes adultery, whoring, promiscuity, and beastiality.
At the same time, the bible is also very clear that male homosexuality is a sin and an abomination. I assume because of anal sex, disease, uncleanliness, and the pursuit of carnal pleasures over that of multiplying and spreading your seed. None of which need apply to bi-sexual women accepting sperm as described above.
Of course, many church teachings directly conflict with what the bible says, but the above is what it actually says on the topic.
I think that self-proclaimed lesbians are either brainwashed, hurt/wronged/scorned, or just deliberately contrarian due to one of or some combination of the former.

Women are more programmable in sexual preferences. They need to be because they need to go after the most successful male rather than pure biological preference. What is the most successful male? That depends on a lot of context and isn't single dimensional. What makes a suit and tie attractive. Is it some innate biological instinct to like black clothing? No. It's a product of impression.
Men on the other hand are biologically driven in their attraction. What actually looks hot on a woman doesn't go in and out of style. Maybe what women think looks hot changes but that's it.
But my view on lesbians is it isn't actually about attraction. It's also more of a lifestyle. If a woman is sexually frustrated she will accept anything that will do the job. <- That obviously doesn't apply to all women, but some. And has maybe been trained by feminists to view everything men do as harmful and so might distance themselves from men. Remember, women are 100% impressionable. They will view everything they see as either good or bad entirely based on what they are taught, so it's very easy to teach them to hate men.
