Any comprehensive posts, videos or blogs out there you'd mind pointing out? I've also been toying with the idea for a couple years off and on but am Firmly rooted as a mechanic/tinker/diyer... to the point that I found out I have more fun Wrenching on motorcycles than riding them.
I've seen some stuff on jewtube, but no clue if it's a bunch of BS.
Sadly I don't lol. I got my start with a video that was titled something like "building an FPV drone for under $100"
It was a couple of videos that did a good job explaining the basic parts. Then it was just a matter of looking at bigger and better stuff, and trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Setting the rates and PID settings was the biggest hurdle for me. Collecting the parts and assembling them was pretty easy.
As far as a camera drone, you need enough lift for whatever camera you want to carry. If it's just a little gopro, a 4 motor drone would be plenty. If you wanted to carry a full dslr you'd be in a much bigger 6 motor rig. Then you'd also need the appropriate gps module in addition to your basic /optional parts.(gimbals and such)
Finally if you're building you'd need a radio, chargers, and batteries. Thankfully if you are building, you can make all of your future rigs run off the same equipment and don't have to carry around 10 different radios, screens, and battery/charger sets
It's a lot of fun, but I kinda dove in head first, my under a $100 drone was close to a grand after the smoke cleared. The next drone was under $100, and the camera drone was about $250 iirc.
My radio can control everything from planes to boats and everything in between so I was okay spending the cash on a nice one.
It's all just how far you want to go with it
