Any competition I should be considering?

The fact that it has a remote with touch screen instead using your phone is a big selling point.

Also like the vertical shooting option.

didnt DJI implement some trackers into their drones, where you have to register them or else they can remotely brick them? All of my drones I've built, its a fun hobby, but I get that people would rather buy RTF.

Any comprehensive posts, videos or blogs out there you'd mind pointing out? I've also been toying with the idea for a couple years off and on but am Firmly rooted as a mechanic/tinker/diyer... to the point that I found out I have more fun Wrenching on motorcycles than riding them.

I've seen some stuff on jewtube, but no clue if it's a bunch of BS.

Sadly I don't lol. I got my start with a video that was titled something like "building an FPV drone for under $100"

It was a couple of videos that did a good job explaining the basic parts. Then it was just a matter of looking at bigger and better stuff, and trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Setting the rates and PID settings was the biggest hurdle for me. Collecting the parts and assembling them was pretty easy.

As far as a camera drone, you need enough lift for whatever camera you want to carry. If it's just a little gopro, a 4 motor drone would be plenty. If you wanted to carry a full dslr you'd be in a much bigger 6 motor rig. Then you'd also need the appropriate gps module in addition to your basic /optional parts.(gimbals and such)

Finally if you're building you'd need a radio, chargers, and batteries. Thankfully if you are building, you can make all of your future rigs run off the same equipment and don't have to carry around 10 different radios, screens, and battery/charger sets

It's a lot of fun, but I kinda dove in head first, my under a $100 drone was close to a grand after the smoke cleared. The next drone was under $100, and the camera drone was about $250 iirc.

My radio can control everything from planes to boats and everything in between so I was okay spending the cash on a nice one.

It's all just how far you want to go with it

Yes. You have to install software that won’t let you go inside or outside certain perimeters and you can’t go above a certain altitude. It’s fairly limiting IMO.

Yeah hard pass, I'll build my own without the big brother chip

I have a Dji drone. It's fun and a still a bit novel to use. I recommend watching out for power lines when flying, especially when the drone goes out of sight. Make sure the video feed to your phone or tablet has enough resolution so you can see them before you lose your drone.

Which one do you have? DJI looks like it makes a lot of cool options.

I got one for Christmas in 2020. It's the Dji Mavic air. It can fly to a max altitude of 120m (which isn't that high) and can fly about a half mile away and make it back no problem. It also shoots 4k video as well. Great drone, the gift cost about $750 in 2020. It should've gone down in price since then.

This is a good one. If this is your first it's probably a bit overkill but nonetheless it is good.

I wouldn't go for the alternatives as they are just behind the ball on features, in particular safety (for the drone) features... the last you want is your $1000 doohickey riding off into the sunset.

On that note, if this is your first drone, definitely get insurance on it as most people I know that use them professionally or are beginners have wrecked their drones.

Thanks, I will definitely get it scheduled along with my other photography equipment. I'm not too worried about it being overkill as I'd rather get something good to start than have to upgrade later. So seems like this would be a sound purchase that I won't regret.

I'm planning on getting the package with the remote and the "fly more bundle" that comes with extra batteries and stuffs.

I have other drones, but they are more in the toy category.

I'm looking at getting my 107 license as well.

Fuck all that noise - get a DJI M30

damn that is pricy.

cool tech

Skydio and Autel are two other contenders. Listen to 's advice but take it with a huge grain of salt. Not bashing him but he's either not read up on what's out there or is just a dji fanboy.

Tbh I haven't looked into those, I'll have to check them out.

I'm also looking at it from the pro-sumer/industrial perspective as there are little comparatives to DJI's Matice/Inspire lines unless you get something specialized.

Check out the Autel Dragonfish and tell me you don't want to give that a go. It's nuts.
