America flourished because the states had enough power to fragment centralized corruption until around the time of the federal reserve act, which allowed the old money banking families to control the individual states via financing through the captured federal government. It's been downhill since then. States have to use the US Dollar and are dependent on federal tax money to survive, so they are neutered. The federal government has also taken more and more power over the years through three letter agencies that use broadly written regulation to overrule state law.
