It is hard work, and the margins are thin. Even if the employer does his best to pay a fair wage, it's usually really not enough. Anyone who has done this kind of work will tell you the same thing. The tips you give your server are usually shared with other staff such as the cooks and dishwashers. Try to leave a decent tip for your service, they deserve it!

I hate the whole idea of bribing someone to do their fucking job. But I am white so it's usually 10% for take out 20% for sit down unless the server is a nigger.

Go to europe and see what tipping buys you. European servers will leave you for dead and cause you to do unprofessional shit like get out of your chair just to go to the front to ask for your check etc. Want your water to be kept full? It will never never never happen unless you wave them down, aggressively, and only if you're lucky enough they looked your way in one of the once in every 15 minutes the single server enters the room.
I sat I believe literally 30 minutes just waiting for my check. 15 to find out they were never going to come. 5 waiting for the server to wave them down, they never looked my way. In 10 I still missed the second chance. 15 I either went to the front or actually wave them down, after getting quite angry pissed about it.
And if you ever confronted them about they left you for dead. They couldn't possibly be more pleased they gave you the most piss poor service ever.

When you eat or whatever at a resort by the beach, you know you're getting ripped off (I mean compared to eating somewhere else; obviously you're paying for the location which is what it is). I don't even look at the prices at those places. It's easier not to get upset that way.
