I am pretty sure that is how chilli and curry were invented. It's the only way to stretch meat going bad in hot climates.

That is the entire Szechuan cooking in a nutshell. Far away from anything, meat spoils easily. The chili etc spice it up p by killing bacteria and hiding the flavor of bad meat.
