In the novel "The Giver", author Lois Lowry creates a dystopian society where children at age eight are required to perform "volunteer services" throughout their community until age twelve. These services can be whatever they choose, but the hours must be documented for the child to move on socially to adulthood at age 12.

I was wondering if this sort of obligatory volunteering would be helpful to today's very socially/psychically/emotionally/spiritually/mentally sick society. Instead of sitting at a terminal all day and being brainwashed into thinking "golly I must be trans cuz I'm bored and unhappy" or "golly I have to shoot a bunch of people", kids could be volunteering at nursing homes or hospitals or museums or any place or anything that would help them grow fundamentally to be better people, hence a better society.

Slippery slope of socialism/marxism?

Involuntary volunteering where you don't pay the child? Child slave labor?

The difference between this and the education system is that slave labor is cashed out immediately whereas the education system invests in eroding the human spirit to yield a lifetime of indendured servitude in a few decades.

Yeah pretty much but that's what volunteering is, working at something for no pay but experience and helping a community.

I don't like other people's kids most of the time, but wouldn't mind them picking up trash in public places. Having them in a convalescent home spreading their germs to old immune compromised people is not desirable in my opinion, and they'd also need one persons per kid to supervise and make sure they don't mess around with medications and belongings.

In the novel "The Giver" the childrens volunteering hours are vital to their success in the adult world regarding the jobs, marriage, etc. It helps for their character and role in adult society. Children need to learn to be cooperative civil members of society- they aren't learning that anymore, they're learning to be sexually deviant mentally ill reprobates. Have to do something.

It can, if implemented properly. The problem is the establishment will substitute services of the child's choosing to services they deem permitted, which we all know will be shit that will facilitate their indoctrination.

Instead, much like with all problems, rather than look to a government to mandate something like this, implement it yourself in your household or in your community and encourage children to follow services that will actually benefit them and provide them with valuable real-world knowledge and experience.

And then obligatory military service from 18 to 21. Those opposed to fighting and stuff can have administrative jobs in government.

This would be good if compulsory military units would secure the borders, complete infrastructure projects, etc. Otherwise tell me how it wouldn't be a set of meat for MIC/Israel.

I have always believed that mandatory military service would be a pre-requisite for any government job or elected office.

That's slavery invented by a Commie

Yeah, it's hard to define. Like I said, it's from a dystopian novel and very community specific.

What we need is to remove barriers from having kids work and they'll work to get paid. Kids love money! Right now it's steaight up illegal for kids under 14 or 15 to work, and everywhere I worked they don't hire anyone under 18 because there are too many things they are not allowed to do by law.

Slippery slope child labor laws. Of course now we don't have kidding falling into carding machines or vats of leather tanning solutions..lowering working age may be an option as well.

Without child labor laws it would be up to the parents whether they allow (or make) their kids work. So it's really a question on whether you want to infringe on the parents' autonomy. Personally I think it would have to be something extraordinary to have society or the state interfere with how parents raise their kids. If kids are forced to work by their parents you gotta ask the question why the parents are so hard up for money in the forst place.

You mean like they are now with giving children sex hormones and vaccines in schools?
