I used to just back everything up to an external hdd. Now I sync everything with my nextcloud server. I mount the drive locally on my phone with rclone. The only thing that actually uses space on my phone now is apps.

Only problem I have with Nextcloud is it seems to corrupt images.

As far as images go I've been using . I set up a shared folder in nextcloud that we sync our images to and photoprism imports them from there. Photos is definitely not one of nextcloud's best features.
