In the era of banks turning the buying of a house into glorified renting with mortgages and property taxes it may seem inticing to some to just rent a apartment or house on the cheaper end (at least until Vive La Revolution!™ begins). By cheap I mean $750 a month or less.

Finding cheap rent is not a bad plan. Just be prepared for super shitty landlords of various races, that fit the stereotypes.

It may be a better idea to buy a house and get some roomates. At least you'd have some control over your living partners and be moving in the "no mortgage" route.

It might be an even better idea to find some cheap land, with some sort of internet connection, buy it outright and camp on the land until you can afford a manufactured home in cash. Then at least you'd have land for a small homestead.

Not only that but you live near poor people, the shittier they sometimes can be. Not all but ive lived in a cheap apartment before. most poor people are poor for a reason due to lifestyle choices.

Yes, he may come home to an extension cord running into his neighbors house.

Once upon a time I lived next to a hispanic gangster who, among other things, pointed a camera into my bedroom window and was engaging in human trafficking. The police knew better than to respond to my calls. So much fun!

Location, location, location. If you are willing to live in a place where no one else wants to live, you can get cheap rent.

What part of the country do you want to live in?

You can literally buy a motor home or large camping trailer for about $250 a month from camping world.

I have never seen a house that's rent rate is lower than it's mortage. Even though people bitch and moan about you still not actually owning the home when you pay off the mortage because you have a property tax, it will always be lower.

Cheapest around here is 700 for a one bedroom in the hood.

We're rapidly heading toward a recession, but unlike 2008, home prices are unlikely to decline very much since in a rare show of form, the government did its job and has required lenders to scrutinize borrower income much more closely since the housing crash.

With that said, a $750 a month rent would be a steal and much cheaper than most mortgages you could get, however the long term strategy for wealth would still be to own a home though. I wouldn't bet the farm on the entire world crashing unless you know something the rest of us don't, and owning a home potentially gives you unique ways to defend yourself and family that an apartment wouldn't. It still seems to make sense to push for homeownership even if we're heading towards a civil revolution. At that point, we've all lost everything either way.

I was renting a two bedroom apartment and converted the living and dining rooms into two extra rooms to have the other rooms pay for about $100 less than the whole rent.

I used foam to fit the new walls into the existing infrastructure without nailing into it etc. Fit snug and moved no where.
