Why yourself while lucid dreaming? How does that feel?

I dream that I leave my body and watch it from an external point of view.
I've always heard that you will die in real life if you die while dreaming.
Everyone says, "I woke up just before I hit the ground or just before the monster ate me."
This is hearsay evidence only, but my cousin told me his friend woke up from a nap (they were doing drugs all day) and screamed, "THEY'RE AFTER ME! THEY'RE AFTER ME!" and fell over dead. He was 29. A surfer. Heart attack was the official cause of death.
When asleep, the body is not really shutdown and whatever that triggers a sensory reaction will influence your dreams. (i.e pinky in glass of water will make the sleeper pee him/herself)
