Someone told me yesterday that he takes kratom for his chronic hip pain and he says it really works. My question is this would it be safe for my ole grumpy father to take it who's on a bunch of different medications. He's got bad arthritis in his hands. He likes to drink but would this get him high which he would not like? I've seen a gas station or two with a kratom sign on the door but is there a more legit place to purchase it?

It's a type of coffee tree grown primarily in south East Asia. It's not in itself, an opiate. But it does work on the opiate receptors in the brain. It works as a very light opiate. In low doses, it acts more as a stimulant, in higher doses, it acts more as a depressant. There are 3 main types of kratom. Red vein, which is great for pain, is pretty much a downer. White vein, which acts more as a stimulant, great for focus and energy. Green vein, which is a hybrid of the two.

My recommendation, go check out a headshop. They usually sell kratom. Try the OPMS brand. Other than that, most kratom brands in headshops and gas stations are mainly garbage. They will probably have it in stock, if they sell kratom at all, though. Definitely recommend the red and green vein "maeng da" strains. Great for pain. Also, has less side effects than prescription pain meds.
