Someone told me yesterday that he takes kratom for his chronic hip pain and he says it really works. My question is this would it be safe for my ole grumpy father to take it who's on a bunch of different medications. He's got bad arthritis in his hands. He likes to drink but would this get him high which he would not like? I've seen a gas station or two with a kratom sign on the door but is there a more legit place to purchase it?

It’s not technically an opiate, as in it isn’t derived from opium. It is, however, and opioid, meaning it acts on the opioid receptors similar to how opiates affect you. Take it from me though, I’ve been addicted to the stuff several times and each time the withdrawals are more and more intense. Do some research on people’s anecdotal reports on addiction to kratom and withdrawal. The most annoying withdrawal symptom was what I would describe as neuropathy in my forearms which was painful and would not allow for sleep. It would usually take anywhere for 5-10 for the physical symptoms to completely subside, followed by several months of PAWS which would ebb and flow. Most just depression and insomnia by that point.

If you’re going to use it, I’d say keep your doses around 6 grams or so a day, only two days out of the week. What will inevitably happen, though, is you’ll start to use more and more often and eventually develop a tolerance, then up your doses gradually until you’re dependent. That said, it’s certainly not the worst thing to overcome and probably not near as bad as opiates (I wouldn’t know from experience).

It's not for me it's for my dad potentially. He's got really bad hands and I just figured it might be a good way to kill the pain. He needs a thumb knuckle replacement. And I figured if he could do some kratom maybe that would make it not hurt as much. I don't want to see him strung out hovering around 80 years old, I feel pretty terrible about that.

What’s wrong with his hands? Arthritis? Maybe some omega 3s could help with inflammation. Or smoke some pot using either edibles or vaporizing it. Kratom can also cause constipation, which may be bad for an older fella.

He was a pilot for his latter half of his career. So he's got bad carpal tunnel and his joints lock up which causes hands to make a claw shape. He wouldn't be interested in pot. But someone on here mentioned CBD so maybe that's an avenue.

I take it once a week just for the pleasure of feeling complete relaxation. If it’s pain relief and relaxation you are after I think the Maeng Da red strain is the one you should go with. I’ve never tried the others but some promise increased energy and less pain management. I just buy the powder and mix it with orange juice. I definitely don’t care to take it more than twice a week simply because tolerance builds quickly and the flavor, even with orange juice is god awful. Seriously the worst thing I have ever tasted so you might want to give it to your dad in pill form, which is more expensive, but you could probably just buy capsules and the little filling tool and make your own. This stuff and be quite potent and I certainly wouldn’t want to be any higher. Due to the tolerance increase I would recommend using this for your dad only two or three times a week while finding something else that is not drug related to get him through the off days.

It is not an opioid. It is a plant in the coffee family that affects the MU opiate receptor.

[–] 0 pt

You simpleton, it’s called the MU opioid—not opiate receptor. Look it up. Opiates are derived from opium. Kratom is indeed related to coffee, but it’s mitragynine that binds to the OPIOID—not opiate receptors.

Are you kidding me? You need to look it up. Or actually I’ll do it for you:

Should I keep going?

Oh, and here’s a study about kratom being a partial agonist of the mu receptor. Fucking retard

My biggest pet peeve is somebody who acts like they know everything when in reality they know nothing about what they are talking about

I did not know you could get addicted to karton.

Its an opiate. Not as strong as illegal ones. My wife has used to for back pain for years. Taste like shit though. Gives you energy and a buzz.

The gas station stuff is crap a lot. We get our from a herb store in town. Find it in powder, the capsules are a rip off.

This is where my wife orders. https://goldenrulebotanicals.com/ I can vouch for quality been buying from these guys for years. Been to there store as well.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Would the energy and buzz make him incapacitated to drive and make rational decisions? I don't want him to get high because he is the caretaker of my mom who's sick and he's also the only person to do the financial stuff and I don't want him to fuck up because he's like "oh whatever". You could increase or decrease your dosage I would imagine for the same type of effect? So the more you take the more you buzz out, the less you take the same scenario?

[–] 3 pts (edited )

I can drive on it, its not like pain pills. More like a relaxing head change. Also it depends on dose. I would start small. The energy is like a good cup of coffee. So imagine a little pep with a bit of warm fuzziness.

Also different strains give different energy and buzz. So it helps to experiment with types of Kratom as well.

My wife got her father to use it, and it has HELPED him a lot.

Also not even close to as strong as pills. So no you wont be dope fiend leaning or anything.

My wife isnt up yet. Give me a bit and I can get more info for you. Like which strain is the best etc,

Okay cool, thanks 👍

It’s not an opiate or opioid. It affects one opiate receptor.

[–] 3 pts (edited )

It's a type of coffee tree grown primarily in south East Asia. It's not in itself, an opiate. But it does work on the opiate receptors in the brain. It works as a very light opiate. In low doses, it acts more as a stimulant, in higher doses, it acts more as a depressant. There are 3 main types of kratom. Red vein, which is great for pain, is pretty much a downer. White vein, which acts more as a stimulant, great for focus and energy. Green vein, which is a hybrid of the two.

My recommendation, go check out a headshop. They usually sell kratom. Try the OPMS brand. Other than that, most kratom brands in headshops and gas stations are mainly garbage. They will probably have it in stock, if they sell kratom at all, though. Definitely recommend the red and green vein "maeng da" strains. Great for pain. Also, has less side effects than prescription pain meds.

I heard it can cause ED and loss of sex libido after a while. I worked with a dude who drank it and he looked like he was having a heart attacks every day haha

Other friend is currently using it to remove his opiate addiction but now kratom has replaced it and he says it has ruined his kidneys and mental focus.

[–] 0 pt

That's interesting. The Ed and libido kill he might not enjoy. Not saying he's Don Juan but every man likes likes the piping to work when called upon. And I'm not sure he might be thrilled about the kidney thing. Thanks for the info.

Has your dad tried CBD? 150mg twice a day keeps my aches and pains in check. I haven’t taken otc pain meds for quite awhile.

[–] 0 pt

You know I've mentioned that to him and he just never did anything about it. I'll bring it up again, I just don't think he knows where to turn to. What product do you use for your pain?

[–] 0 pt

This has been my goto as they have a great veteran discount. https://www.lazarusnaturals.com/ I use a full spectrum/ high potency tincture. The tincture is cheaper that say gel caps, I don’t mind the taste. When I talk to people that attempted CBD I think they under dose, but some people just don’t process it the same. The CBD subreddit is pretty decent to lurk around.

[–] 0 pt

When you say hi potency do you mean getting fucked up or just like it just numbs all of your pain? He is a veteran so that's good to know about the discount.

[–] 0 pt

Lots of info already posted.

Also it's used to help with opioid withdrawal.

There's different strains, and most are associated with some color, I forget what is what.

I think it's used in Thailand as a garnish, or cooked in with the food.

In USA some have been trying to make it illegal, probably big pharm and some lobiests trying to push people into addictive opioids that they make.

[–] 0 pt

The capsules may be more expensive but I gladly pay for them cause Kratom tastes like crap.

I'd suggest the capsules to any newbie, especially an older person.

[–] 0 pt

It totally works. I thought it was illegal still. I used it for about a year 10 years ago. Get the actual powder and mix it with water.

Search "Borax Conspiracy"

After a motorcycle accident I didn’t want to be put on pain pills so I’ve been taking Kratom in powder form every day for like three years for pain. I’m a Carpenter and my job is physically demanding and it has worked wonders. There’s a lot of misinformation about it, especially people calling it an opiate or opioid. It is a plant in the coffee family that affects one minor opiate receptor. You don’t get a “high“ from it. Just a minor pleasurable feeling like you would get from coffee. It works great for pain and is a big-time immune booster. It does have a slight risk of dependency. From my experience it is very mild

Thanks for sharing this.

I do the same. The red vein Kratom is excellent for pain. I got in a car accident, and I’m in 9/10 pain when I wake up. I do (2) 1/2 teaspoons of the powder (toss and wash), several times a day. I feel like I have a screwdriver in my back, and this gets rid of 95% of the pain. I’ve tried mixing it with pudding or tea, but it tasted terrible. I put some in my mouth and wash it down with Gatorade. It’s like eating a spoonful of cinnamon, but it tastes like dirt. Very effective though. No need for opiates, do this and stay away from prescription drugs. I also do Charolette’s Web CBD roll-on (525mg), and it helps too.

It's got alkaloids.

[–] 1 pt

What's an alkaloid?

[–] 0 pt

They're similar to opioids. Mitrogina Especiosa is a plant that's related to the coffee plant and has different strains such a red Borneo or green maeng da and many others. Each strain has a different effect and hits each person different. The trick is when new and dealing with kratom less is more. Goodluck

Thanks for explaining this to me.
