When you like yourself it doesn’t matter what anyone else says
This is the only answer. Once you love yourself more than anyone else's criticism, their opinions become null and void.
It appeals to man's pride for sure, but the reality is this sort of mindset is why society is hemorrhaging.
The real answer is Christ, for when Christ has favored you what is the opinion of doomed creatures

I understand what you mean, where society becomes sacrilegious and loses it's values. However, can't you see the parallels in our perspectives? If you embrace God/Christ to where other's criticism mean nothing to you, is that not similar to embracing yourself to achieve the same thing?
And the opposite is true.
When you hold others in contempt you cannot take anything they say seriously
Be your own best friend. When you stop caring about what anyone else thinks people gravitate to you.
