I think a lot of it comes with age/experience. Not something easily passed on as "advice". But, trying the best I can here:
If you're true to yourself, the opinion of others becomes meaningless.
By "true to yourself", I mean that if you're balding ~ own it and clip your hair close. If you're going grey, own it and don't try to cover it with a shitty dye job (hint, all dye jobs are shitty, even if they cost $1000). Stop tying your self image to outside objects, like a Vehicle, or a residence, clothes fit in here too (at least from a brand name aspect). When you do things For you in life, outside opinion suddenly doesn't matter... hence, you care less.
I noticed a BIG uptick in no caring when I stopped paying for TV service in 2011, and going to movies (kinda tapered off for a decade, but last was probably 2013). Suddenly the press of advertising, which is just subliminal programing of how to think, was gone.
