I believe that NPC's can be woken up, you just have to make them truly suffer, so that they can understand what the rest of us already know, that life involves some pain, and there is no Easy Mode. Hard to wake them up though when the governments are actively taking our money to give to these NPC's. The governments are providing them with a fake Easy Mode to get their votes and approval, and paying for it by stealing the fruits of OUR labors.
