I'm at my folks house in the country and I heard the sound of little feet running around either in the attic or in the wall. what do you think I can use to bait them and kill whatever the noise is? I don't think it's field mice, could be a pack rat or maybe chipmunks but it's at night and chipmunks aren't night creatures.

They're going to eat poison and then die in the wall or attic and stink up the house. I'd try and take them alive

The rat poison used in bait traps usually makes the poor buggers extremely hot before they die, so they naturally head outside to cool off before dying. Then it kills a few birds and raccoons who ate the tainted meat. Poison is a messy business and should be avoided when possible.
