Pretty much any young child wants to feel like they fit in - and for those who have trouble with social norms even more so. If they have a scumbag adult feeding ideas that being a fag or some sort of other deviant is a good idea, they're going to follow it (unless they have a honed bullshit detector, which can also happen with autists too).
