A big issue that's been on the horizon, way before covid, was boomers retiring. It was already a massive issue prior. Some will return here and there due to inflation. Another reason is that people were booted from their jobs and told to sink or swim. "You are not essential". So others shifted and went back to school or followed other endeavors. Many other reasons as others have stated.
