Where I work, finding people is harder than it should be because senior leadership is now trying to find local candidates willing to come into the office regularly. After two-plus years of working from home - and being just as productive, if not more - potential hires are balking at the idea.

I'm really surprised more people aren't upset about this. This is clearly a class thing. All the college educated dweebs suddenly don't have to make a commute anymore? How much money did they save on gas/wear on vehicle during the "lockdowns"? Thousands? How much did the workers who went to work save- oh right, nothing, they had to fucking eat it. Salaries from remote workers should've been calculated, their commutes calculated, and that money distributed among on-site workers. They're the ones in danger, right?

When we worked from home the company took your attitude and decided it was OK to call and demand work anytime between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM instead of 8 to 4 like at the office. Didn't matter if you were at Home fucking Depot loading lumber after normal work hours - you had better drop that shit and open your laptop right fucking now and approve those requisitions. "You weren't doing anything, were you Hoppes? Oh, you had a dentist appointment? Well, you don't anymore. We need you to draft a new company policy memo and send a draft within two hours."
They also required you be available on MSTeams every second between 8 and 4, so it's not like you could just intersperse work and home shit.
Just like the company always does, they milked that shit for their own advantage. Don't imagine that everyone was sitting home drinking margaritas and collecting a paycheck. You ever try to have a serious meeting with the executives while you hear a large crash and then your 2 year-old screaming in the other room? It was fun.

This is such bullshit. Wife and I both work more than we did before work from home. Costs associated with building and maintaining two separate studio/offices with multiple scenes per studio including the desks, lighting, cameras, LENSES, monitors, controllers, mics, audio boards, etc... Business class internet. Increased food consumption because now eating at home every meal.. Loss of all onsite benefits normally associated with a skill upper-mid technical position, like a gym. And yes, if you are serious about remaining work at home, a functional studio with more than one scene, such as a whiteboard, is a necessity.

It's totally a class thing. The workers OMG RISKED THEIR LIVES OMG to keep things moving but if you needed permission or judgment from the ruling class (such as registering a vehicle or adding someone to your insurance) they were at home sleeping and safe.
Remember, unemployment only counts those actively looking for work. Except for trump, Obama to now, people have been dropping out of the market. The number of unemployed who simply stopped looking is likely record breaking.
There is a shortage of people who want to work for a living, not live off of government handouts.
I'd say that the NPC's are too entitled to work for money, they think the government should burp and diaper them.

Many people went remote full time. This effectively pulls them out of their geographic pool of workers.
Put all those together and you have a worker shortage
Too many BS jobs soaking up workers. I don't know many people who are doing what they want or even good at. They just got the best paying option. For many that included not working because it was cheaper to cut working expenses that paid too little and go on government cheese.
My take? We don't have a worker shortage, we have a pay shortage.
A big issue that's been on the horizon, way before covid, was boomers retiring. It was already a massive issue prior. Some will return here and there due to inflation.
Another reason is that people were booted from their jobs and told to sink or swim. "You are not essential". So others shifted and went back to school or followed other endeavors.
Many other reasons as others have stated.
People got paid more than they were making just to stay home during covid, and they became lazy.
There is a people willing to work for chump change shortage
No shortage of actual workers. Too many gibs to make it worthwhile.
