Gas operated shotgun is just a semi auto. Uses blow back from trapped gases to cycle in the next round. Yeah man AR platform are rifles. Most .30-30s you'll find will be lever action.

Either is fine really. I'd say go 12 gauge shotgun just b/c it's the first gun I'd grab If I woke up to someone breaking into the house. Pistol grip w/ a folding stock, loaded w/ buckshot.

My FIL said the same thing, 12ga for home defense and it works for hunting. However I like the idea of a rifle just because it gives me more range.
