Either is fine really. I'd say go 12 gauge shotgun just b/c it's the first gun I'd grab If I woke up to someone breaking into the house. Pistol grip w/ a folding stock, loaded w/ buckshot.
My FIL said the same thing, 12ga for home defense and it works for hunting. However I like the idea of a rifle just because it gives me more range.
Training and range time is more important than any specific cartridge etc. Whatever you get just get yourself comfortable with it and you're gtg.
Yeah I'm thinking I'd better go to a range and practice before I actually go hunting.
