My FIL said the same thing, 12ga for home defense and it works for hunting. However I like the idea of a rifle just because it gives me more range.
Training and range time is more important than any specific cartridge etc. Whatever you get just get yourself comfortable with it and you're gtg.
Yeah I'm thinking I'd better go to a range and practice before I actually go hunting.
Not sure about your state but there's a ton of free ones at state parks here. Lots of places will also let you try before you buy depending. Generally just exercise a little patience and buy used. There's no shortage of used guns out there that some guy fired once then never again. Saves a ton of money. Browse a lot of youtube videos about evaluating firearm condition. When you think you've got it watch more.
