Edit: thank you everyone for your replies. i will not officially close the thread but i got some good information from everyone. i think my theory was disproven.

When i was a baby my parents would get frustrated i didnt take naps well and would drive me around the block until i fell asleep in a car seat.

I dont know if its because of that or if its because woman are naturally bad drivers or some other thing, but now as an adult, even if i get good sleep i will have moments when im driving where my vision will shake and i have to hit myself to stay awake otherwise i will then black out for a second (dozing off) and have to force myself awake before i hit traffic.

the only time i do not have this issue is if i havnt driven in a long time or if im not going for a long drive. i mostly had this issue when i was working, going to school, and was on the road all the time fairly sleep deprived, but even in that time period i would still black out if i was well rested. I do not have that issue now but im a stay at home mom with a rare reason to drive.

Get check for sleep apnea.

Second this.

Know 2 people who kept falling asleep when they would sit down for long time, both later found out they have sleep apnea.

Friend of mine was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Lost forty pounds and no more sleep apnea.

Same story with one of my friends, I remembered now.

Apparently it's to do with too much fat on the chin and neck, for some people that's also what causes snoring.

OP must love our discussion.

I found out I had it cause I would fall asleep at work after sleeping for 9 hours a night. Doctor ordered a sleep study and I stopped breathing in my sleep 37 times in less than 5 hours. Mine came after a severe spinal chord and neck injury.

Did you manage to get rid of it?

[–] 4 pts

I used to have this problem after working long hours and lack of sleep.

Try going through a sleep clinic to find the problem if you can. For me it was as simple as never entered REM sleep bc I would grind my teeth. Dentist fit me with a small brace (size of a tic tac) to wear when I sleep, and no problems since. I also do not get massive headaches anymore.

I've crammed a sponge in my mouth during grinding periods because I'm cheap as fuck.

I was wondering who has been taking my dish sponges....

That's toxic for your body, if you had any idea the shit they put in sponges, you'd go luffa or sea sponge for life.

Lack of sleep makes you sleepy at the wheel, we need 7.5 hours a night MINIMUM. Anything less than 5 sleep cycles is detrimental to your health, 6 (9 hours) is perfect, anything over 6 cycles forces your body to produce more collagen than necessary, which makes you look young and feel a little tired (despite getting enough sleep). You want to nap after lunch too, just a 10-15 minute power nap with your legs elevated over your heart somehow (recliners work amazing). The majority of work-related accidents occur after lunch, as no one naps after lunch like they're supposed to. I have a tough time driving whilst tired as well, almost drove off a cliff one time. A decade later and I'm a sleep connoisseur, spreading the gospel of our nightly 'death with benefits' to anyone willing to listen. It's how we learn, it's how we remember, it's how we live longer, and how we prevent dementia/Alzheimer's. Sleep is love. Sleep is life.

oooooh yeah haha that sounds like it would do it >_> i think i barely was getting enough sleep to save my life, i was indestructibly young

What is the significance of having your legs elevated over your heart?

[–] 1 pt

Promotes circulation, easier on your heart, easier to relax

Look up road hypnotism.

it is really hard not being hypnotized by the road during the boring familiar commute

Worked great for my kids, drive around for 15, then carry into the house. They are perfectly healthy and happy. Zero issues. Now poor posture for several hours a day, or simply never being told to keep your head upright a d not slouch, or using too thick Pillow your childhood, that can do it.

thats good to hear, i was hoping to hear a comment from someone in your position

Assumed OP was exclusively put to sleep in a car by her parents until I read the entire post.

Probably just tired and your brain zones out when focused on the task of driving.

No, my son had to be put to sleep in the car for a while, now at 19 he sleeps all the flipping time. My business partner and I do some long road trips. The monotony of the drive is the problem, stop and trot about a bit, failing that, juice up on Red Bull and keep the heat off and window open if you feel drowsy. Happy travels.
