This is a powerful question and very meme-able. It sticks in the back of the brain almost as well as “Hitler did nothing wrong.“

It is memorable for the same reasons. The I nitial Normie thought is “that can’t possibly be right. That is so wrong it’s stupid.” But it is memorable because they feel that it is so wrong. And so it sticks in the brain. About 36 hours later it occurs to them “well what if that were correct. That would be silly.” And then they start to look into it.

Maybe I’m just jaded, but I have a feeling that if normies were given evidence that this was true, they would defend the practice and in some cases even celebrate it.
