This is anecdotal so no official source but I think it warrants mentioning.
A friend of mine works in elder care, had a patient that served in the army during WWII who knew he had a short time left. He started confessing to all this terrible shit he did. There was one story that stood out. His unit was in Italy when they came across an orphanage, abandoned by the adults. The children, aged maybe 3 to twelve were all starving. There was nothing to be done for them so they were all put up against the wall and shot.
It would be hard to live with that. I read of a not too different thing from the Battle of France involving a Tommy and a wounded child.
