Operating a smoker is also great fun, although the newer pellet types and the like are pretty gay and take the skill and effort out of it.
No self respecting man would use a pellet smoker. That's as stupid as an electric one. You may as well just buy liquid smoke and base your meat.
Hell yeah. I use an old fashioned barrel style charcoal grill/smoker. Picked it up at Walmart for like $200 a few years ago and have been making some bomb ass BBQ on it since.
I was mulling over trying to McGuiver a smoker out of my fire pit. The biggest problem is controlling the burn because it would be hard to control air ingress. I was thinking I could arrange charcoal brickets in a snake pattern so the burn is controlled by the diameter of the row. But it's kind of a silly idea given the irregularity of briquettes.
Some people just put coal into a pit and burry the whole thing, and that works, so there is some hope I think.
