It was created to take soldiers off the battlefield with chronic illness that passes onto children. The infection, itself, is like dandruff, in that it isn't just one infection... it is comprised of multiple "coinfections". In order to treat it, you have to treat multiple types of infections. A round of antibiotics, then a round of antifungals, then another round of a different antibiotic. Rinse and repeat. But its nasty and some people are just stuck with it.
