There was a sci-fi novel I read about 20 years ago where an AI started making money by purchasing life insurance on people that it's actuarial tables had determined were at high risk of kicking off in the near future. I can't recall if it found methods to help speed things up by sabotaging online connected microchips. (Cars, toasters, elevators, etc) I think it might have been "When HARLIE was 1 (1972)" but there's a very good chance I'm way off base.

I think it *might* have been "When HARLIE was 1 (1972)" but there's a very good chance I'm way off base.
