I live in the south so none of that winter blend shit you yankees go thru. Both my vehicles I swear are getting worse. I cant really keep totally accurate track cause I got bigger tires but know I could for just my use. But wtf does it matter I still got to buy the shit.

You just got bigger tires. That changes the gearing. DUH!

Its been that way for years, Duh. Jeep 60 is 70, truck 65 is 70.

Ok, I dont keep track, tire size doesnt matter for fuel use. It just seems I need to fill up more than before.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Hmm I never thought about it before but having bigger tires will get you fewer miles on the odometer.

[–] 1 pt

Yes, but that has nothing to do with fuel use.I mean I know its less mpg but I dont think Im getting as much mpg as I use to. I think thats on purpose. They are fuckin with our gas.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Perhaps your gas station is going above 10% ethanol? That would reduce the mpg.

[–] 1 pt

Yes, if they admitted it, Im in Tx.

[–] 2 pts

Possibly higher Ethanol percentage?

[–] 0 pt

Exactly. I'm seeing worse mileage of around 3mpg. Which is right in line for what I'd expect with the reported 5%-10% increase of ethanol.

[–] 1 pt

Totally feel like it's way worse for some odd reason.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Ummm bigger tires will make you use more gas. Just fyi

Also as cars age mph goes down.

[–] 0 pt

Dude, really? Do you read much? I have had bigger tires for years, I understand everything about them. Im talking about gas usage lately compared to a year or so ago.

[–] 1 pt

You do go through winter blends. Everywhere does. Here it's the heat that changes it not the cold. Starting around may you will get a higher octane blend to compensate for heat expansion of your gas. It ends around October. Your area probably hasn't switched to their summer blend yet.

[–] 0 pt

Im gonna need proof of this. Not saying it isnt true just need verification. Tx.

[–] 2 pts

While I don't know how to give "proof", you can verify with any spatco or similar company worker. Walmart that sell ethanol free gas is a great example. In may the heat increases volume of gasoline, thereby reducing amount of potential power per gallon. To adjust for this, Walmart changes their blends on 89 to 70% ethanol free, 30% 87. Buy 89 gas from may till October.

Sounds technical.

SPC?

Audit much? As in ISO?

Just curious.

Maybe you need new spark plugs or your fuel delivery system could be running a bit rich. Dirty oil used to effect the mileage in my 90s era carbureted Chevy 350. Brakes can drag if your calipers are rusty on the outside of the piston and don’t fully release.

Unless the octane at the pump has changed it shouldn’t matter. BTU content can be changed during distillation but I’m not sure if they can maintain the same octane.

Nope, my shit is fine. Its just a theory, I have heard others say the same.

Change your air filter, and oil. I think the low end gas has been making my truck run rough. Switch to Shell too. You may have a point, they may be adding stuff. Could we measure this with a cheap diagnostic tool?

[–] 0 pt

My oil and air is fine, I use shell only now

[–] 1 pt

Scotty recommended this tool, might be worth a try.

He ran the inspection check and it had a section for fuel. I think this may be my next investment for the truck.

Your assuming everything is OBD2.

[–] 1 pt

There's a gas station near my house that is always the cheapest gas I can find. I was filing up there for a while but I started noticing that I was filling up more often than I used to have to. Some time after I filled up there my car would knock around a bit when I started it back up. I stopped going to the cheap gas station. Try doing the same if you haven't already.

I have no idea, I haven't been driving like I used too so I haven't bought a full tank since February. I just buy about half a tank and that lasts over a month with the amount I drive at the moment. I have an app that calculates the mileage I get but I would have to fill the tank and I just haven't had a need for a full tank.

[–] 1 pt

I look at half a tank as empty, you know fuel cools your pump.

[–] 1 pt

Owner's manual for my car says to not run it below a gallon as then the pump is exposed. What I'm doing is fine.

[–] 1 pt

Its heat, spoken like someone who has never replaced a fuel pump.

I've been monitoring mine for the past few years (fill tank, record gallons added and trip meter, reset trip meter) and haven't seen any worsening.
