1. Men's immediate need to be able to house & feed their family. If something puts that at risk they will avoid it. 2. Women are biologically driven to fit in within the community. This is how they survive. They couldn't just strike off into the woods by themselves or with their children and expect to survive. They were completely dependent on the people around them.
