Yes, CDC still requires anyone returning to the US or entering legally to provide a negative test result taken within 1 day of your return (not 24 hours, just the day before).
Keep an eye on updates for that, as it could change.
For the test, check the hotel you're staying at to see if they offer a rapid test onsite and what the fee is. Otherwise, you can pick up a home test kit with a telehealth appointment add on here at home, schedule to appointment to take place the day before your return. I wouldn't recommend scheduling an appointment in the UK unless your hotel provides it, because the hotel tests are usually a lower negotiated price with a specific provider and you won't have to worry about getting to and from the facility.
Download your airline's app and you can submit test results through there. Also airlines favor different home test kits, so check yours works with whatever airline.
Finally, if you test positive for COVID before then, you can get a dr.s note clearing you of the required test to return for up to 90 days of the onset of symptoms. As long as you're asymptomatic, the note will clear you if any testing requirements, bc you'll most likely test positive even though you've recovered.
Source: own a travel agency and deal with this daily. Also the 90-day workaround is on the CDC website.
