Certain things go well together, but not all combinations are good.
i like chocolate on my potato chips
Demon.
What sort of evil are you?
The only place sweet and salty things belong together is in your stomach, never in your mouth. I hate anything sweet when I'm eating meat. I've never understood how anyone could eat mint jelly with lamb or cooked cranberries with turkey. Yeck. First you eat the potato chips. You wait a while, and then you eat the chocolate. Never mix the two, or you will go to hell when you die.
There really aren't any opposites in taste IMO. There are various pairs that you wouldn't think would go together well until you add a third ingredient that moderates them.
Sure there are. There are complementary flavors and contrasting flavors. This applies to everything from recipes to wine/beverage pairings.
Drinking a peppery wine with spicy food would be a complementary pairing but choosing a sweet wine would be contrasting, and arguably just better as it creates a balance between the two rather than over-amplifying a single aspect of the meal
I don't think "contrasting" is the same as "opposite" though. There are many flavors you'd consider contrasting to each of those; which would be opposite to the other?
I agree that maybe ‘opposite’ isn’t the best word, but I feel like he was asking about contrasting flavors without thinking of that particular word. But really, sweet is pretty opposite of spicy. Can you name a flavor profile that’s contrasting to spicy that isn’t sweet? Like bitter and spicy are different profiles and probably don’t go together at all, so I don’t think it even makes sense to describe them as contrasting, just a bad pairing
Salted chocolate or caramel or other similar things i find are not very tasty.
Moscow mules and other sweet and sour things are pretty good.
Chocolate and spice is a great combo
Chinese sweet & sour pork is about all I can think of that I sorta like, so no, not a fan. Especially the fruit and meat crap of Middle East cooking....but I do like Chinese lemon chicken enough to have learned how to make it.
Sweet and sour chicken is gross. Sesame chicken is good though.
George likes his chicken SPICY!
I eat sardines mixed with mustard, wasabi and mayo. Whip it into a patte type paste and spread the whole deliciousness onto a fine cracker like sociables or ritz. I do a similar thing with fresh smoked salmon except i omit the mustard and wasabi and still use mayo but add a little (I mean very little) dill relish. and a dash of crushed red pepper and an light zing of cayenne pepper powder and a dash of garlic powder.
Somethings yes. Trail mix with M&Ms for example I think is great. But PB&J I find revolting.
I must confess I do like a bit of marmite and honey on crumpets. Sorry.
It all very much depends on how well the chef makes it.
