To the point that basically everything they say is a half-truth or fabrication? How do people get like that? It's got to be a self-esteem or maybe anxiety thing.

Personally? Yes, my sister did that all the time until I just ghosted on her. Two ex wives who both did this. Borderline personality disorder with my sister. Second wife exhibited psychotic tendencies with clear narcissism. I had to study this shit to understand why I fell for it so easily. Early conditioning can make a person not realize this isn't normal and cause them to not be able to set boundaries. These sorts actually test you to see how much bullshit you will tolerate. When you call them out on their bullshit they can be highly destructive in your life.

In my most recent experience, she went with the "I'm offended" approach, followed by "if you really think I would do that then don't talk to me", followed by the truth told in a way that was really twisted up to try to make her not the bad guy. Then not a peep since.

It was kind of amusing. Sort of like when a little kid lies and comes up with off the wall explanations as to why he's not lying. I feel sorry for her boyfriend though, holy shit.

Hmm, it's like a more creative form of gaslighting
