I currently have no issues with my current setup, I run a 3570k paired with a GTX 960 and 16 GB ram.

I'm mostly worried about lack of security patches.

As far as gaming, the current computer holds up fine. I really only play Star Craft 2 and CS:GO. Other random titles thrown in, but none are demanding and have me wishing I had more computer power.

My latest update plan was to wait until VR was 'worth it' enough to get a new build. Now I'm not sure.

You can still upgrade, at zero cost, to Windows 10 by using the ISO media downloaded with Microsoft Media Creation Tool. Make a full drive image, so you can restore properly if it hiccups. unplug any USB devices. Plug in a USB stick made with the Media Creation Tool, ,or even use a DVD of v.1809 that matches your machine 32 or 64 bit. Run setup.exe. You will be upgraded to Windows 10. I suggest that you do not uncheck the check for updates box. You need to insure maximum compatibility by having Win 10 only install what your machine needs for drivers. Only incompatible programs will be removed during the upgrade. There won't be many. Probably nothing will be removed.. Any that are can be reinstalled using compatibility as Windows 7, without a hitch. I do this to several customer machines per week. When setting it up, move all seven slides to No. You'll see what I mean when you see that screen. Also, don't use a Microsoft account, unless you want to sync multiple machines. On the lower left corner, choose Use a local account. The next screen will ask if you're sure. Your machine is worth keeping running, as long as it meets your needs.

Third party anti-virus programs often slow down Windows 10, and are unnecessary. All our machines have been built with only Windows Defender as the AV program for the past 15 months.

You don't actually need a key to run windows 10. Just has an annoying message at the bottom right. The message bothered me so I spent $5 for a key on ebay. I know these sellers aren't entirely above board as it's not directly from microsoft but I get no annoying messages telling me to activate and would just plead ignorance if ever asked. The download is straight from microsoft and the key is just a string of numbers they email you. I'd just drop a couple bucks but that's me. Plus if the key doesn't work you can get a refund easily through paypal. The guys doing it are trying to build good reviews on those accounts. Sometimes they even offer to refund the cost of the key for a good review.

My son has an unactivated version with that nagging box on the machine I built with him. That would bug me too much. I think I'll try what is suggesting first.

Yeah it's annoying. If that doesn't do it keys are cheap on ebay. I prefer doing clean installs myself.

Same here with the clean installs.

If nothing else, this will give me an excuse to make sure I have everything backed up. My C:\ is a SSD which was just supposed to have the OS on it, but I think I ended up with a bunch of other junk on there too over the years.

I'd totally grab him a key too. Like I said. Super cheap on ebay.

Just occurred to me... added bonus of getting the key on ebay is it's the pro version
