I hear this critique quite a bit when discussing marxist progressive thought. Orwell was pretty explicit in pointing out that it is a mistake to believe this is an "error". The fact that these ideas are contradictory is part of the deconstruction. By imposing conflicts like this it made the party more powerful by making it harder to apply logic to positions rather than follow accepted doctrine. Doublethink is a feature not a bug.
