Most people will go along with whatever they believe most people believe. Media creates a false image of consensus. This is why most people support Trump, are anti abortion, and are skeptical about the coof, yet will feel that anyone expressing such opinions are on the wrong side, and will not do so of their own isolated will, without example.

It's Plato's cave, and the media know this. Mass media is a tool that can be used to lie to everyone about what everyone else believes, and thereby pseudo-program everyone to behave in a certain way.
