It’s goes away on its own, as a form of a kind of “automatic ignoring” it. I forget I have it for entire months.

[–] 1 pt

That happened with earlier increases of it over the years, where at first it seemed loud but after months I stopped noticing it much. But the latest increase is hard to ignore each day. Sometimes it's intense. I really fucked up recently doing some hammering.

You are lucky to have such a mild case. The ringing in my ears is incessant and never leaves me alone even for a moment.

get your blood pressure checked. it may be high and you don't even know it.

Ear plugs. Suppressors. Really, those are your only answers. I know it seems like a bullshit copout, but im just giving you the facts. Hearing loss is nothing to laught at in my book. Good luck. That shit cant be "treated". Whatever hearing you lose, you can not get back. Not with current medical technology. Protect whqt you have now because you cant get it back.

Ear plugs don't work for tinnitus, the sound is coming from the inside!!! Ear plugs actually amplify it.

Yeah, earplugs prevent tinnitus. If you already have it youre fucked. But hearing protection will still prevent yoy from doing further damage.

Odd anecdote for you but perhaps of help in avoiding gimmick treatments.

I have been 100% deaf in one ear since age 5. Mumps killed the auditory nerve. I have really bad tinnitus -- in both ears.

Suggests to me that the source is not damage to the sensor.

[–] 1 pt

Yes!! This is exactly it. Your ears are not hearing anything at all, it's your brain hearing it. I think it is nerve damage.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

no, sleep with something playing to cover the ringing.

Do you have any additional symptoms? Hearing loss? Muffled hearing? Distorted hearing? Ear pain? A feeling of fullness in the ear? Balance issues? Also, is it both ears or just one?

How severe is the tinnitus on a scale of "only noticeable if you plug your ears" to "dental drill 24/7"?

If you answer those questions I can point you in the right direction. The big thing is to determine if it's tinnitus from sound damage or some other source (viral/genetic/trauma).

I've had it in the past, but it was sporadic, only lasting a few days maybe, and at a level where I didn't really notice it at all.

But last night was pretty bad in terms of sleeping, I had to put the fan on full blast and play videos all night long to distract me from it.

I work in a pretty quiet office, and that was pretty bad today. If I'm not actively on the phone, it gets pretty bad pretty quick.

I can't think of anything that physical that could've caused this.

Could be genetic, my aunt has it real bad, but she was also a professional musician, so I'd attribute hearing damage in her case

Is it both ears or just one? And how long ago in the past? As in weeks or years ago?

The reason I ask is that tinnitus from damage is usually pretty easy to attribute. Power tools, rock concerts, gun ranges, working in noisy factories, etc.

If it's not from exposure to noise, go see an ENT tomorrow because there are other causes for tinnitus which can be treated if you catch them quickly enough. E.g. viral labyrinthitis can cause you to wake up one day with horrific tinnitus, and if a doc hops on it right quick they can prevent long term damage and mitigate the symptoms in the short term.

It has been around in a very mild form for a long time, but so mild I don't really notice it if I turn a fan on at night.

Viral Labyrinthitis sounds like a disease from an awesome small budget horror film, so I'd be ok with that in my obituary.

A temporary cure. I use the 'treatment' at least a couple times a week. Edit: A good massage therapist can help with tight neck muscles that may be a cause.

Buy an old radio alarm clock from a thrift store and tune it to an empty channel of static. $5 white noise generator. Preferably wood paneled because that shit looks cool. The GE ones play for an hour if you hit the snooze button, just long enough to get you to sleep.

[–] 2 pts

That's actually really good advice for a cheap white-noise machine.

Plus, I can tune it to Power 99 Philly if I need a black noise machine.

White noise makers are extremely helpful for me sleeping. Avoid the ones that have a looping noise sample because that will drive you nuts. I've found several LectroFan Classic units at thrift stores and they make true random noise of adjustable tone, never looping. There are also good apps, like myNoise (iOS/Android) or Noise Generator by TMSOFT (Android), played through a speaker.

I've been using a box fan for years, I think I may have actually had low-grade tinnitus for a long time.

It has just ramped up way more in the past few weeks.

[–] 1 pt

Yes. Don't sit in silence.

[–] 0 pt

Damn.

Silence is my favorite thing.
