There is a TON of political power in the hands of NPC's. Creating your own just takes the goats and quarantines them away from the plebs. Buying the plebnest means ruffling the right feathers instead of preaching to the choir.

Could he spin up his own competing product? Perhaps, but would it have the same value that Twitter has today?
If you only look at the value of technical utility, then it could be argued that he could create a more valuable platform than Twitter. But Twitter's total value is much more than just its technical utility. It already has brand value, and a number of products & services rely heavily on it. Just think of the kinds of data, human and machine generated, that flow that platform.
Why spend money on creating a new platform from the ground up and convince others to interface with it, if you can spend the same (or less) on taking over the existing platform?

I too think it's a sus move. Twitter employees are all SJWs and will sabotage anything he tries to do. You can't accomplish anything if the people doing the actual work don't want to do it.

I'm sure a good percentage of Twit employees just go along with the prevailing culture to keep their job and be socially accepted. If Musk changes the culture, the activist SJWs will quit or get fired as they realize they can't do what they want anymore. Most workers are probably pansy boys and slut girls who talk tough about fighting for gay/trans/whatever rights now but will grovel for their paycheck when the whip comes down on them.
