Altavista

I used it damn near until DDG came out. I knew Google was going to be shit from the start. Any company self-righteous enough to make "do no evil" or whatever it was a slogan definitely intends to do evil.

I think that your memory must be bad. Altavista was the best until Google came along, but it was still bad. Google far, far, superior to anything that came before.

Webcrawler

this was the one i used the most.

Webcrawler and well, fuck me, it still exists.

Remember HotBot? It was blocked by the overly aggressive netnanny filter the company I worked for in the 90s had. Apparently someone thought it was a sexual reference.

Our school filter did that to Hotmail under the same logic. While failing to block rotten.com or stileproject

Yep. We had some cities around us that had "Lick" in the name. That was always amusing. Because there's no use for the work lick other than that of a pornographic nature...

Metacrawler polled multiple popular search engines at the time, providing a compilation of the results it deemed best

It was all about the BBS’s. Secret directories, access levels, good stuff. Then your mom picks up the phone and you drop carrier on a file a few times and they cancel your access for crashing the server.

Good times.

Only 1 phone line?

What are you rich or somethin?

Yah mane

No, obviously didn't know the trick of grabbing the phone line at at house entry point and wiring the modem there, and powering the house off of the modems other side.

GamesUniverse had 8

AND if you paid em $5 a month you could eventually get web access too.

For me it was Gopher, then Alta-Vista, then Yahoo, then Google, then DuckDuckGo, then back to Google when DuckDuckGo promised to censor the shit out of search results for political reasons.

then back to Google

Bing is less censored than Google, and the results are good.

i get zero relevant search results via bing in aus unless im searching for something american.
