I recall seeing someone make a Arduino powered device with emp shielding that stored a plothera of useful post internet things like a dictionary, encyclopedia, medical books, etc. Anyone know of what I speak? I cannot find any in the searches I have done today.

HAM radio is something worth looking into

[–] 1 pt

Yep, that is on my to do list as well.

I was looking for something of a project that grabs useful info like this:

https://antimatter15.com/project/offline-wiki/ But that link within does not work now.

So this has nothing to do with what you were asking about, but there is a book, I think it is called De Ars Metallica, some Latin bullshit like that

But if you are looking to live off the grid, get a physical copy of that book. It has invaluable knowledge on how to start mining from nothing.

Just toss a dozen hustler mags in a waterproof tote and youre all set.

How about learning about mesh networks and design some cheap outdoor boxes for it that can be made cheap and easy.

You can put PDFs of this stuff on an old phone and then toss that in a faraday bag. The most inexpensive and easiest way to achieve this.

I was just looking at a faraday bag. Think I might try to do Arduino with a SSD as i want to grab some gardening videos and throw that in a faraday bag, thanks. My problem with a phone is the trackability...

[–] 1 pt

I didn't think about trackability, but wouldn't keeping it in airplane mode prevent that? I'm not sure how these things ping without service or in airplane mode. I understand why people wouldn't trust them regardless. Another thought is that if there was an EMP situation that necessitated using the information on the phone, that would have also taken out the ability to track it.

It wouldn't be tracked while in the bag and powered off.

You may be right in thinking that trackability after an emp is limited risk but airplane mode is not an impediment for tracking, neither is turning it off... Depending on whom is doing the tracking.

Put it on a high-endurance microSD card (e.g. Samsung Pro Endurance) and put that in a thick metal box. And have a phone that accepts a card (many do).

I understand the objective, but wouldn't it be better to get books? They don't meed power and last for lifetimes with basic care. Military manuals are cheap and easy to come by for basic and advanced skills. that are free for the requesting.

[–] 1 pt

The problem with books is space and weight. It's the difference between transporting one small lightweight box vs many many heavy boxes. A library renders a bugout bag null and void.

Yep, more than a few field manuals are on my list but in the event of an internet outage I would like the speed of a computer for some level of research on the fundamental things.

Dont take it out of its emp enclosure after the first blast of ww3 starts. Wait at least a week as there are bound to be more blasts.

That would suck to have it out after an attack and then get it fried.

Just buy a cheap tablet off of Woot and load it up with everything you want. Then store it in an EMP shielded container to protect it. (Probably want to store a solar charger for the tablet as well.) Then after the nukes go off you can open it and still use it.

Do a search for the word oxymoron. You'll get all the info you need.

Lol, the concept crossed my mind more than once trying to come up with search terms. I'm trying to build electronic dead sea scrolls and an internet to go.

Look into Cinco's Innernette. That may be the plan for you.

That looks like it could have been an outtake pilot story board idea from Napoleon Dynamite.
