This is why the breakdown of language is so important. Transgender was never a word that was used in the past. There used to be two words which are more descriptive but are now deemed unacceptable. You had 'Transexual' and 'Transvestite'. Transexual was someone who'd had hormones or surgery and had actually undergone a physical change to be more like the other gender. Transvestite was someone who wore clothing and makeup to look like the other gender but was otherwise physically unchanged from how they were born. Both of those words were banned and replaced with Transgender which is deliberately less descriptive and more confusing.
