Very people can store enough food for more than a month or even a week.

So what can be grown in the smallest amount of space to be self sustaining?

Potatoes in barrels? Vertical hydro phonics? What plants?Tilapia farming in crates?

Egg laying chickens? Meat chickens?

Beans? The dreaded bugs?

What?

No we aren't talking people with a few acres. I mean people who have to go victory garden style in 1/4 acre or less.

Let's say shit was going to be scarce for 2 years.

I get 90# of potatoes in an area the is 24' long and about 4-5' wide. Enough soybeans for dozens of edemame side dishes for my family of 5 in an area 24' by 2'. both require basically no effort other than planting and store very well. Asparagus will provide for 20 years without any other effort other than pruning the ferns in late winter. Plant it once and youre done. apples, pears, peaches and be pruned to any size you want and provide for years. Not sure what area you are in but figs and persimmons will provide for years and years too and dont take up a lot room.

How far south do you need to be for these or are they winter proof?

izone 7 or higher for the figs. potatoes and soybean are summer annual crops but everything else is pretty winter hardy.
